I woke up this morning in a crappier mood than usual. Normally I can get out of bed, grab a cup of coffee, make myself look presentable, and go about my day. But this morning was a little different. My mother came down the stairs at 7:00am and told me that I was going to drive my brother to school and then drop my other brother's lunch money off to him. I was warm, in my bed, and hadn't quite finished my dream yet. Begrudgingly and looking like a hot mess, I pulled on some jeans, threw on my Angel hoodie, and got into my car to wait for my brother. Now, I hate being in a bad mood. There is enough hate and anger in this world for all 5'3 of me to contribute any more. I put up a quick prayer and asked the Lord to please, for the sake of everyone around me, put some joy in my heart for the day.
But He did something a little different.
Instead I saw these faces. The small, little faces of Charlotte Bacon, Daniel Barden, Olivia Engel, Josephine Gay, Ana Marquez-Greene, Dylan Hockley, Madeleine Hsu, Catherine Hubbard, Chase Kowalski, Jesse Lewis, James Mattioli, Grace McDonnell, Anne Marie Murphy, Emilie Parker, Jack Pinto, Noah Pozner, Caroline Previdi, Jessica Rekos, Avielle Richman, Benjamin Wheeler, and Allison Wyatt.
The thought came in my head how lucky I was to be driving my brother to school that morning. I thought of how badly the siblings and parents of these little children wish that they could be driving their child to school today and not identifying and claiming their bodies from a morgue. Ironically enough, the day of the Sandy Hook shooting, my own elementary school, the one my brother attends, had a lock down drill to practice what would be done if an armed gunman were to come into the school. Their drill started at 9:30 am.
Sometimes, I admittedly struggle with this aspect of my faith. If our God is so good and so loving, why were 26 innocent lives taken from the world so viciously? They hadn't done anything wrong. They were just babies. Why was Adam Lanza's sickness allowed to take over his mind so much so that he was driven to absolute madness? Its hard for me to let go of my human pride and admit that I don't have the answer. Its hard for me to understand that we'll never understand why the Lord allows such evil to exist in the world.
But I have hope.
I have hope because of women like Rachel Davino, Dawn Hochsprung, Lauren Rousseau, Mary Sherlach, and Victoria Soto who died trying to save their students.I have hope because in that moment, humanity completely forgot about itself and gave its life for another human being. I have hope because Christ has already overcome the world (hence John 16:33). So today, hug your siblings/children a little tighter and tell the people around you that you love them. Stand outside for a moment and take a deep breath- let the air fill every fiber of your being. Feel the sunshine gently warm your face. Live every moment to the fullest because there are 27 people who will never have the chance to experience the beauty of this world. Your strength will come from the Lord- you need only ask.
Pray for these women and children by name today. Lets keep their memory of innocence and loyalty alive by living our own lives joyfully and to the absolute fullest. Pray for their families and their community. Pray that their mothers and fathers be given the strength and will to live. Pray that their hearts be given a peace that surpasses all human understanding and that we, as a Nation, do everything in our power to make sure that a tragedy like this never happens again.

Around campus...
I'm sure its probably a tundra right now but I'm still thankful for my little school! Despite its disgusting weather conditions...
I am thankful for...
SO MANY THINGS!!!
- Being able to see my best friend tomorrow
- My crazy family- especially my little brothers.
- My 'you might as well be' family, Aunt Rie, Mr. Justin, Bill, Andrew <3 , and Lauren
- That I can walk around my house without pants on without fear of judgement
- That my family supports and owns firearms
- That I can fit into my jeans from high school
- That I'm an American
I am thinking about...
All the stuff I have to do this week... especially my 20 page paper due next Monday that I haven't started.... WOOO!! Its on communication environments in special needs classrooms- so its interesting but its just tedious.
My goals for the week....
Finish all of my minor assignments and projects so that I can spend all of finals week focusing on my paper!! I also want to decorate my house for Christmas!!
At school....
This week, I'm still enamored with the idea of being a teacher! I'm excited to get into the classroom and the actually make a difference in the life of a child.
From the kitchen..
Currently in the kitchen-
- Turkey
- Stuffing
- Cauliflower Au Gratin
- Brussel Sprouts and pancetta
- Sweet potato souffle
- Candied sweet potatoes
- Green bean casserole
- Mashed potatoes
I love gorging yourself at holidays... <3
I am creating....
more time in my schedule to pray! I really need to make that happen.
Clicking around...
Pinterest is an educators best friend. I've decided. I found this wonderful idea just clicking around! How awesome will this be in my classroom?! I can see my students having a great time with this in a lesson.
I am praying...
This St. Joseph Novena from EWTN . I figure that whoever I'm meant to marry will probably need all the prayers he can get! I'm praying for God-like patience...
A few plans for the rest of the week...
I need to get my stuff organized to come home for the Christmas break. I also need to get my stuff together to do my annual Christmas detox! I'm also thinking about adding P90x to my workout routine.. I'll keep you posted as to whether or not that actually happens though.

The Joy of Cooking
( Apparently this never posted.... from November....)
So it might just be the fact that I have a nutritionist for a mother, but my life seems to be this vicious cycle between wanting to cook things that will clog your arteries in a minute and knowing that they're bad for you and feeling guilty about thinking about making them. As most people might know about me, I love cooking and baking. If I hadn't been told college was a nonnegotiable, I most likely would have gone to culinary school and aspired to by the next Giada de Laurentiis. When I cook, I feel like everything is right in the world. I feel like I can be creative and express a side of me that most people don't get to see. To those who don't enjoy cooking, that sounds like the biggest cornball statement of them all. But to those who DO enjoy being in the kitchen, it makes total sense. I love that you can travel the world with just a few ingredients and a stove. I love looking into a pantry full of ingredients and having my brain whirl with culinary ideas. I love the smell of baked goods and the magnetic effect it has on all ages.
Any emotion can be expressed through a product of the kitchen. On my bad days, the kitchen is filled with fried foods and butter- cream of this combined with cheesy goodness baked to perfection over chicken with crispy onions on top. My comfort food is carbs. There is also most likely a very large glass of wine in my hand. On good days, I love to experiment with new flavors and techniques. I make lots of spicy foods and love working with citrus- ironic because my dad hates everything about both of those things! On these days, there is also most likely a very large glass of wine in my hand. I feel like it just completes my process in some twisted way. On both good and bad days, there is almost always a baked good in the oven.
There is a sense of stability in baking that counterbalances the freedom and creative license of cooking. In one way, its comforting to know that everything is already planned out for you. If you follow all of these steps exactly and do not deviate, it will come out like you're expecting. If only life were that way sometimes. There is a rush in baking something new and exciting. You're on edge measuring out ingredients and keeping a hawk eye on the finishing product in the oven. But maybe that's just me. With cooking comes a sense of adventure and intrigue. I don't believe in measuring cups when I'm cooking- I'm all about the eyeball. I have a very good mind for remembering the ingredients and steps in a recipe but not so much for the numerical portions of it all. So maybe my haphazard eyeball measuring is actually just a coping mechanism for my mathematical failures. Although I may be lax in my measurement of ingredients, I'm more than a little serious about presentation. I like things to look nice because it shows pride in your work and respect for the people you made it for. So for goodness sake- get some flowers and linen napkins and call it a night.
My absolute favorite part of being in the kitchen though, is being there with other people. I love when people sit at the island and just talk to me. Make me laugh while I'm cutting onions, cry while I'm mincing garlic, and ponder universal mysteries while tempering chocolate. Because making food and physical touch are how I SHOW love, if I make food for you, you're probably a big deal. I love cooking because it shows a side of me that people don't generally get to see. In the kitchen, I'm completely in my element. I dance around the kitchen and sing into wooden spoons like I'm on American Idol. I talk to my brothers like I'm on a cooking show and in my mind, am a perfect mix of Giada, Sandra, and Ina. I put love into my food that, although I don't mean to toot my own horn, comes out pretty damn good. I'm excited for the day when I have a husband and nuggets to cook for- my own family to share my love of culinary creations with. My kitchen will be an axis on which my little world and home rotate. It will be a place of both significant and insignificant moments. There will be curses uttered when I underestimate how hot that pan is and radiant smiles when I pull out that first Thanksgiving turkey. Whether its 2 or 5 years from now, I will still cook for those I love and put every piece of my heart into a plate of goodness to share with others.

Brotherly Love
(For some reason, I can't make a caption on the video soooo I give you the Knights of the Holy Queen. These are the brothers I love so much <3 )
So there are many things in life I'm thankful for. Naptime, showers, freshly shaven legs, coffee, christmas themed coffee creamer, and Martha Stewart's kitchen collection- just to name a few. But today, I am thankful in particular for one very special group of men. The Knights of the Holy Queen. These men have had a bigger impact on my life than they'll ever know. They're awesome, amazing, crazy, passionate, and filled with a love of Our Lady that's inspiring.
They call me on to holiness in every aspect of my life and help keep me humble. They're willing to drop everything in a second without a regard to what they'd rather be doing.... or play for 5 hours straight during a retreat. They're everything I want my brothers to grow up to be.
These are men.
Men aren't just people who open up doors, help carry in groceries, and (maybe some day) put a shiny rock on your left hand. Men call you on to be a better representation of the perfect woman- Our Lady. I once had a conversation with a friend in which we determined that a woman shouldn't be treated like a princess- she should be treated like shes a model of Our Lady.
Why is this? Because Our Lady was kind of a baller. I mean seriously... at the drop of a hat, she was at Elizabeth's side to help her despite the fact that she was bearing the Savior of the world and was facing being killed by her community. Nope. She went to go help her cousin. Also while carrying the Savior of the world, she rode to Bethlehem... on the back of a donkey. She was a tough cookie. But she did it in a feminine way.
So ladies, please don't walk around and expect to be treated like a princess. Expect to be treated like a model of Our Lady. Its nice to have the door held open for you but never forget that you are capable of doing it on your own. Look for a man who will see both Our Lady and Eve in you- because remember you are both. We're all on this journey together.
Thank you, Knights for being amazing, crazy, and the perfect brothers to balance our our crazy sisterhood <3

Pure Exhaustion
I have no idea why I am so tired! Its not even like a "Oh I could use a nice little nap" tired. No. Its like, my eyes are closing in class and its only noon tired. What the heck?! But I digress.
Nicholas lookin all fly and stuff
I got to go home this weekend which was awesome! My brother Nicholas went to his first homecoming and I must say, he looked rather dashing. The original plan was for him to wear a bow tie but his date said she'd prefer if he didn't. Guess who he will NOT be taking to the next dance. Seriously!! Who doesn't love a guy with a bow tie? People with poor taste, that's who.
I still think that there is nothing more attractive than a man in a suit and tie. Hopefully one day I'll get to marry a businessman and finally have a use for this sick obsession I have with ironing things. There's just something about taking a wrinkled mess and turning it into something presentable that's just very therapeutic for me.
In addition to it being Nicholas's homecoming, it was also my brother Christopher's birthday!! He is now 17 years old....shoot. I'm old. I don't remember my 17th birthday at all! Whats even crazier to me is that it wasn't that long ago... only 4 years ago!
Even though it makes me feel ancient to say that I cant remember my 17th birthday I still find comfort in the idea that all the trials and trouble of the present will most likely be forgotten in the next 4 years or so. For some reason, that calms my heart and makes me stress a little less about all the crazyness and drama that goes on. Its comforting to know that you wont feel this way forever. Its nice to know that at some point, the pain goes away.
The birthday boy with Momma!
I used to hate change. I would get angry or upset or hurt when people would come in and out of my life or when I was removed from one situation and put into another. But I guess time has made me wiser and I find myself pining for those moments when everything changes. Anything to break up the monotony of it all.
I have to be careful though and remember to not let myself become anxious or dissatisfied with the 'stillness' of life. There is beauty in that too!
Alrighty well I'm exhausted and no fun tonight. I'm going to attempt to be productive and try to ignore my body aching right now =)

Selfishness
Last night as I laid awake thinking about life and what I’m doing with it, I was thinking about all the people the Lord has put in my life. The good and the bad. I started thinking about my philosophy class and how on one hot, muggy, July morning, I got into a heated argument with my professor about whether or not people are capable of making a self-less decision. His argument was valid- he was saying that if we followed the logical progression of my argument, we wouldn't be able to say that, at the core of it all, humanity was good. We weren't bringing God or religion into the argument so neither he nor I could use the argument that everything God creates is good and so therefore humanity must be good. From my own jaded point of view, I counteracted his arguments of self-sacrifice with that of eternal guilt. What if that person hadn't jumped in front of the train to save the other person? If they didn't they would live forever with the guilt of knowing that they should have. We do things because we have to. We have to be self-less because it we’re not, we live with the nagging guilt. After this argument came to a close, he laughed and suggested that I had chosen the wrong major. He offered to write a letter of recommendation to the business department.
Major switching aside, I hadn't thought about this argument since that day. I inevitably went back to the house, went for a run, and forgot all about it. I had forgotten all about how I had just convinced myself that, at the core, I was selfish. I had convinced myself that there was no hope for humanity- until last night. I was laying there thinking about all the people in my life and whether or not I could convince myself that every single one of them was bad. What applies to one must apply to all. How can I say that people like Mother Teresa were selfish to their very core? I know that if I tried hard enough, I could logically work my way there. I could make arguments for her guilt like the man in front of the train. I could make arguments that she did what she did because it’s what Christ told us was going to get us to heaven- service of those less fortunate.
But why would I want to do that?
Why would I want to spend the rest of my life believing that people are bad? I guess for one, it could make me appreciate the good people more. If we’re stilling assuming that my belief in ‘bad people’ is true, the good people are actually completely overcoming their nature and giving themselves to others knowing that it probably won’t be reciprocated. Now THAT is beautiful. Truth be told, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life thinking that people are selfish and bad. I want to believe that people are good. I want to believe that we are good people who make bad decisions. I want to believe that there is such a thing as self-less love. I want to believe that people can actually be in your life without there being some kind of ulterior motive. I want to believe that we can change our impulses and make them towards the good. I want to believe that people can truly want the best for other people without concern for what it will get them.
But I guess this is another occasion of fake it till you make it. If I continue to walk around with a chip in my shoulder about those people in my life who I had deemed 'bad', I'll always see them and people like the as 'bad'. If I approach people with the hope of goodness, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Breathe
But I also have to remember that this education is foundation for the rest of my life so I need to do well in order to succeed. Its only fair to my students.
Speaking of classes, I almost had a full on, full fledged dance party at Panera when I found out that I was going to be able to fit all of my classes in between next semester and next summer without a single conflict. You cant even imagine what a relief that is! Even though I'm graduating a semester behind, I've been able to go through college in 4 years and a semester... that includes transferring and switching majors 3 times. Crazyness.
Time to get back to these study guides and overcome my visceral aversion to them.... Carpe diem!

Don't really have time to post today but I wanted to leave this with you anyway =) If it crosses your mind, please say a prayer for all the students taking midterms over the next 2 weeks! We could really use it.... especially me!

Memoir
So I had this assignment for my Teaching Language Arts class to write a memoir of something that stood out in my mind. I thought about using the usual holiday memory but as I sat down to write, I started a stream of consciousness..... this is what came out:
That minute of silence
was my true lesson of the day.
It was 5:30 am on a
surprisingly cool August day. The shrill of my alarm pierced through the
darkness to remind me that I needed to get up and start the coffee. It was
going to be a long day. My arm reached wearily out and groped for the source of
the sound- my cell phone. The shrill ceased as I hit some button on the phone
and I rolled back over hoping to get just 10 more minutes of sleep.
Unfortunately, I had lost that warm spot in the bed which meant I was now up
for the day. Stretching off sleep and soreness, I flung my feet over the side
of the bunk beds- being careful not to rouse the slumbering 16 year old beneath
me. Carefully, I lowered myself down rung by rung. Finally reaching the bottom,
the floor of the wooden cabin felt cold on my feet and the mountain air coming
through the open window sent a chill through my body that was very
uncharacteristic of the month.
I tip-toed through the mine field of shoes and
hiking gear towards the small yet surprisingly accommodating kitchen. Fumbling
in the morning twilight, I searched through the cabinets for the only thing I
knew would wake me up enough to get through this long day of outdoor
exploration. As the smell of coffee gradually filled the cabin, I got ready for
the day. When the coffee had finished, I took my mug of brewed energy out to
the porch to sit and absorb the beauty of the world around me. Settling down in
a canvas camping chair, the smell of smoke still lingered from the night
before. Dampness had fallen over the cabin site thanks to the rain that had
passed through during the night. The smell of fallen leaves, rain, and smoke
melded together to create that quintessential ‘camping’ smell.
The Vermont mountain
breeze shook the leaves above me and, drawing my knees closer to my chest, I
reveled in the contrast of hot coffee sliding down my throat with the coolness
of the air. Closing my eyes, I took the opportunity to just listen to the world
around me. The rustling of the summer leaves, the sweet singing of the birds, and
the faint rushing of the river that ran just steps away from our cabin. As I
sat, I realized that for a brief moment I had let my mind, my soul, and my body
be completely still. There were no worries, no anxiety ridden anticipation of
tests and papers, no uncertain projections of where my life was headed. I was
still. I had thought that this peace was the thing that God wanted me to learn
for the day. I thought He wanted me to realize that I need moments like that in
order to regroup and remind myself that although my world may be swirling
around me, He is always still.
But He still had more
in store for me.
Teaching me how to play the guitar =)
As I sat in the
stillness of the outdoors, my ears were greeted with the sound of faint
strumming of the guitar. Turning around to look through the open window behind
me, I saw the previously slumbering 16 year old slumped in a wooden chair with
the guitar cradled in his hands. He had grown his hair out over the past two
years- something I was deeply bitter about. I felt like his hair, that fell
into and covered our matching blue eyes, masked the little boy I had grown up
with and had so many aspirations for. My little brother had traded in his innocence
a long time ago for a world of piercings, tattoos, and ‘scream-o’ music.
He had traded in the confidence I saw in his younger years for a cynicism and disdain for authority that I cannot relate to. I watched as his hands moved
gently along the strings plucking out cords of a love ballad; undoubtedly for
some girl who had caused his heart to break. Brushing his hair back from his
eyes, he stopped for a minute and just looked down at the guitar. Holding my
breath, I prayed that he wouldn't see me and stop playing out of self-consciousness.
As I
looked at him looking at his guitar, I saw for a moment my little brother who I
had missed so much. Slumped in the chair, there were no walls built up, no
sarcastic remarks at the ready, and no bristled rejection of either my age or
my morals. I saw that little boy who had been happy to hang out with his sister
and who looked up to me for guidance and direction. Selfish tears welled up in
my eyes as I remember the little boy who I had missed so much. I thought about
the decisions he had made and how they had almost broken apart our family. I
thought of all the late night fights and midnight drives that followed his destruction.
I thought about how he had seen the harm that this kind of lifestyle could
cause and yet had embraced it willingly.
And
yet despite all of these memories, I sat there and looked on the brother that I
loved. I saw that who he was on the outside had not necessarily poisoned who he
is on the inside. He sat there in the cabin and, although it was just for a
minute, had let all of his walls come down. In that minute, it was just he and
I. I thanked God for the grace of being able to see my brother one more time and be reminded of what it truly means to
be a sister. It means loving your siblings for who they are and not rejecting
the façade they put up. It means being a mentor in every moment but still
letting them see that you have a weak side. I‘d like to think that maybe he saw
me too. Maybe as he crawled out of bed and felt the same chill of the breeze
coming through the window, he looked across the minefield of shoes and hiking
gear to see his sister sitting on the porch. Maybe he saw that, although my
parents joke about me being the ‘poster child’ for our family, I still needed a
minute to sit makeup-less on the porch and just breathe in silence.
Eventually,
he picked up his guitar again and continued the ballad. By now, the smell of
coffee had woken up our younger brothers. They began to stir in their beds and
were softly grumbling about the early hour. I slowly unfolded my legs from my
chest and raised myself out of my chair. The sun was
beginning to burn through the dampness of the air and my coffee had gone cold.
I walked back into the cabin, now unafraid of waking anyone up. When I crossed
the threshold, I looked over at my brother. Smiling, I offered the sleepy
teenager a cup of coffee. Bringing over a mug of the steaming cup of
energy, I put my hand on that long, shaggy, brown hair I hated so much.
Tousling it, I told him were going to have to start breakfast soon to which the
response was grumbled thanks for the coffee and a roll of the eyes. I didn't let
this bother me though- it was going to be a new day.
Well there you go folks. Sometime the Lord can work in mysterious ways. Whether it be through a smile on a path, a shared drink after a long day in the kitchen, or a writing assignment for a class. Take a moment to realize today how the Lord might be working in mysterious ways for you today.

Saint Francis Weekend!
![]() |
Angela and I ... gosh I love this girl =)
Three of my favorite highlights from this weekend:
1. Rugby game: Since I cant be at Ole Miss at the moment, I've had to turn my interest in college sports towards rugby. To quote one of my favorite movies- Invictus- rugby is a hooligans sport played by gentlemen. Its football without pads and hardly any rules.... kind of like playing with my brothers. Our rugby team is beyond amazing and crushed the opposing team today in a beautiful 50-15 win. It was great to see so many parents and alumni there cheering our boys on as they took over the field. Hopefully with this win, they'll be going to the playoffs and leading us back to nationals!

SEABIRD!!!! Ahhhhhhh <3
For now, take a moment and offer up a prayer to the Lord for all the blessings in your life. Remember that in this moment, you're exactly where you're supposed to be.

Restarting.
So all of my old posts are deleted. This is my attempt at starting a fresh. I was inspired by this quote that I came across on Pinterest that said - "We are what we repeatedly do." After thinking about it for a while, these words by Aristotle really started to tug at me. I guess this has to be the Lord's grace or something because 87% of the time I can just lie to myself and justify everything that I do wrong with sugared promises of repentance and regret.... but that's another post for another time.
Now back to why I deleted all the other posts and am starting over.
You know those pictures that you look back on from middle school and high school that make you cringe with suppressed awkwardness? The ones where you look at that dress you wore to your 8th grade 'social' and wondered who ever let you leave the house looking like that? I could go on and on of tales of my awkwardness but again... another time. Well those old posts were kind of like that for me. I read through them and saw only rants and complaints of what was bothering me at the time. And then I had this thought- if Aristotle is right and we are what we repeatedly do then through my ranting via an internet source, I'm filling the world with the very negativity I'm complaining about!
*Cue beaming light and hallelujah chorus*
So here is is folks. A fresh start. I have so much in this life to be thankful for and I want to be the person spreading joy to others instead of opening their eyes to negatives they might not have noticed before.
So go! My challenge for you today is to smile and say hello to one person you usually just walk by and pull out a cell phone to avoid eye contact with. You're better than that =)
Peace and Blessings <3
